Gutter Cost Calculator

Estimate gutter replacement by run length and material, with guards, removal and downspouts.

Quick answer: 180 linear feet of aluminum gutter at a typical $9 per linear foot comes to about $1,620 installed. Removing the old gutter adds roughly $200, and a 10% contingency puts the planning figure near $2,000. Adding gutter guards raises the total by about a third.

What is Gutter Cost Calculator?

Gutters are priced by the linear foot of run, and the run is the length of roof edge the gutter follows, not the footprint of the house. Two things drive cost: the material and how many corners, outlets and downspouts the run needs. Aluminum is the most common choice and the reference point, vinyl is cheaper, steel costs a little more and copper several times more. Gutter guards add a meaningful premium but cut the cleaning you have to do. Removal of old gutters, fascia repair and downspout extensions are usually separate items, which is why this calculator adds them explicitly.

Common uses for Gutter Cost Calculator

  • Budget a full gutter replacement before calling installers
  • Compare aluminum, steel, vinyl and copper gutter costs
  • See how much adding gutter guards changes the price
  • Price gutters and downspouts as part of a roofing project

Sizing and number of downspouts

Gutter capacity depends on roof area, roof pitch and local rainfall intensity, and the rule of thumb is roughly one downspout for every thirty to forty feet of gutter, with more on steep or large roofs. Undersized gutters overflow in a storm and can soak fascia and foundations. The number and placement of downspouts often matters more than the gutter material.

When to replace instead of repair

A single leaking joint, a loose hanger or a short section of sagging gutter is usually worth repairing. Replacement makes more sense when the gutters are rusted through, cracked in several places, pulling away from the fascia along their length, or when the fascia itself is rotten. Replacing gutters during a roof project often saves on access costs.

Seamless versus sectional gutters

Seamless gutters are formed on site in long runs, so a typical wall has no joints at all, which is where most leaks begin. Sectional gutters from a store cost less in materials and can be a reasonable DIY project, but they have a joint every ten feet and more places to fail. Professional installation usually means seamless, and it is part of why the installed price is higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure the gutter run?
Measure along the roof edges where the gutters will hang, following the fascia, and add up every straight section, including the front, back and any gables. Round or odd-shaped roofs have more corners, and each inside or outside corner is an extra fitting that shows up in the price.
Is copper worth the extra cost?
Copper costs several times more than aluminum, and it is chosen mainly for appearance or for historic houses where the patina suits the architecture. It lasts a very long time and needs almost no maintenance, but the payback over a normal ownership period is usually about looks rather than savings.
Do gutter guards really help?
They reduce how often you clean the gutters, and in heavily wooded lots that can matter a lot. No guard eliminates maintenance entirely, and some types need periodic clearing themselves. The calculator applies an editable premium for guards so you can judge whether the convenience is worth the price.
Why does water still pool near my foundation?
Downspouts that end next to the wall put the water straight back where you do not want it. Extensions, splash blocks or buried drains that carry water several feet away are usually the fix. Gutter size and the number of downspouts also matter on large roofs with heavy rain.
